Since sensitive skin is a skin condition that many of us may go through at one point or another, it's helpful to have a few helpful tips in your back pocket on how to maintain it well and get it back in tip top shape as quickly as possible.
If you're currently (or ever!) dealing with sensitive skin, follow these tips and you will see a change for the positive!
1. Stay away from foaming cleansers.
If you’ve watched or read any of my stuff (blog posts, videos, instagram and facebook posts!) before, you’re probably pretty familiar with my discontent with foaming cleansers.
I don’t typically recommend foaming cleansers to anyone as most people have some sort of surface dryness.
Steer clear of foaming cleansers, especially when dealing with sensitive skin. Use something hydrating and full of antioxidants to minimize stressors. ETHYST® Clarity Cleanser is a great choice.
2. When it comes to exfoliating, do so gently.
Just because your skin might be feeling sensitive, doesn't mean you should stop exfoliating. Exfoliating our skin helps it to renew and replenish itself more quickly, which is exactly what you need when you are dealing with a sensitive skin period.
Use very gentle manual exfoliants or chemical exfoliants. Harsher products could break down the barrier even more. Enough said.
3. Masque Up!
Add a calming face masque to your routine like the ETHYST® Inner Glow Brightening & Calming Masque. It will give your skin the instant refresh that it needs and help to hydrate and nourish simultaneously.
4. Give back to your skin what's naturally occurring.
Use a moisturizer containing ceramides and/or hyaluronic acid. Ceramides account for 50% of the skin's natural barrier. Hyaluronic acid is also found naturally occurring in the skin.
Giving back to the skin with ingredients that are naturally found there will help to ensure you repair and defend the skin's barrier function.
This is extremely important when it comes to sensitive skin. When you are dealing with sensitive skin, you are more inclined to have a slightly compromised barrier. This leaves you exposed and less protected to the outside world than you normally are. A compromised barrier also lessens the effects a really good skincare product can have on your skin.
The ETHYST® Daily Ritual 24/7 Hydrating Moisturizer is packed with barrier repairing and defending ingredients.
5. Eat and exercise well.
Omega-rich foods and getting your blood circulating will be incredibly helpful to your skin’s barrier and we discussed why a healthy skin barrier is important above.
An easy way to start is by thinking less sugar and more green.
6. Wear sunscreen.
I know what you're thinking. I always harp on sunscreen... and you're right. I do because it's super important!
You need to do everything you can to protect yourself from the environment because it can do a lot of damage to your skin. The UV rays can cause way more skin issues than we naturally think about. They also know how to make a lot of skin issues worse.
ETHYST® Sanctuary Tinted Mineral SPF 40 is everything a sunscreen should be. It is a natural zinc oxide/titanium dioxide combo, has both UVA & UVB protection, and has Vitamins E and C to help protect your skin.
Plus, it's tinted with iron oxide, meaning it will adapt easily to ALL skin tones and it's sheer and matte.
Whenever you find yourself dealing with sensitized skin, I encourage you to use these top tips. Do this consistently and you should see a change in your skin in no time.
